How do you handle password expiry for someone who never logs in with the Novell client?

As per above. There is no warning before expiry in that case.

AFAIR Groupwise checks user's password by doing LDAP bind and when password expires eDirectory just replies back with error. Unfortunately I don't know if there is a quick and out of the box solution…

I did a quick test and with the following settings Im able to change the password when i login at the GW client when it expires so this should cover the part that no need to have a warning upfront for the user right?
