Product Version : 6.x and above

Product Component : SMTP Utility

Platform Version : All supported platforms

Overview

This article details the steps to use the SMTP utility

Details

StarTeam uses SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) e-mail addresses. The SMTP Utility allows administrators to convert existing (non-SMTP) e-mail addresses to SMTP e-mail addresses for StarTeam users. This utility is required when upgrading from StarTeam 3.0 or later to StarTeam 4.2 or later and either or both of the following conditions are true:

¨ E-mail addresses for users were imported into StarTeam Server from Windows NT or 2000.

¨ E-mail names were entered manually using an e-mail convention other than the basic format: yourname@company.com

You do not need to run the SMTP Utility if:

¨ This is the first time you are installing the StarTeam Server.

¨ E-mail addresses are currently in the basic format: yourname@company.com. (This does not imply that the e-mail addresses in StarTeam Server must use only this basic format. You can also use another format: user_friendly_name.)

If you are not sure if you need to run the SMTP Utility, it is best to run it. Running the utility, even if you don?t need to, has no negative effects.

NOTES: You must run the SMTP Utility for each server configuration that fits the above criteria while StarTeam Server is running that server configuration. This utility depends on the existence of Microsoft?s cdo.dll file, that can be installed with Outlook. During the Outlook 2000 installation, the user must check the Collaboration Data Objects check box (which, unfortunately, defaults to OFF) in order to have cdo.dll. In earlier versions of Outlook, cdo.dll was installed automatically.

To run the SMTP Utility:

1. Run StarTeam Server with the server configuration you want to update.

2. Select StartProgramsStarTeamStarTeam ServerSMTP Utility.

The SMTP Utility: Get SMTP Addresses For StarTeam Server dialog opens.

3. Type the server?s machine name in the Server Address text box.

4. Type the endpoint in the Endpoint text box.

The endpoint is the port number associated with the TCP/IP (sockets) protocol.

5. Type an administrator?s name in the User text box.

6. Type the administrator?s password in the Password text box.

7. Do one of the following:

¨ Accept the default path to the SMTP log, C:ConvertToSMTP.txt.

¨ Change the path to the SMTP log.

8. Click Go.

9. When done, check the log to see if the address server (for example, Exchange) has resolved the addresses correctly. For example, a user may end up with the address of someone with a similar name.

10. Repeat these steps for each server configuration.
