DP 10.x Sparse File handling enhancement

Status: Delivered

Part of DP 23.4

Sparse File handling on Linux:
The Disk Agent handles sparse files as one big file, resulting in a log, big backup job that blocks the bandwidth of the backup network unnecessarily. We found a workaround where we identify the sparse files, â€śunsparse” them using tar and exclude the sparsed files from the backup. This includes manual steps during backup and restore so this is a workaround at best.

found an older change request for the same:
QCCR2A41710 Sparse file backup on UNIX and Linux is not handled in an efficient manner
current state : planned

Please enhance this in a new release or patch

  • Some of our backup sets contain many sparse files.  They may have a sparse size of 400GB and an actual size of only 20GB.  This is wasting huge amounts of tape and backup time.

Please get sparse file support on backup for linux systems as soon as possible!
