Knowledge Doc: SBM: Tomcat intermediately stops responding and must be restarted (Oracle only)

Environment

SBM 12.0 and newer, running on Oracle

Situation

This problem may present itself in several different ways. For example:

  • SBM will suddenly stop responding or won't let users log in
  • Users may get 404 errors
  • After users enter login name, and click OK, the system hangs on the "please wait while we log you in" page
  • Users may be able to login, but then get error "Unable to load initial data for Work Center"
  • Users may be able to login, but then dashboards (for example) won't load. They only see the spinning icon
  • Users may login, and the dashboards may draw the widgets, but each widget has the spinning icon

Also, the tomcat.log will give errors such as:

2024-05-27 20:13:18,005 ERROR [ajp-nio-0.0.0.0-6009-exec-4] [org.apache.coyote.ajp.AjpMessage:173] [::] -- Invalid message received with signature [12345]

Cause

SBM is intermittently losing its connection to the Oracle database.
