Can the Copy Database Utility copy to a file?

Hello,

I'm migrating my SBM Windows server to the AWS cloud.

I want to use the "SBM System Administrator/Tools/Copy Database"  Utility. I don't think it's going to work because I won't be able to connect the destination location to the cloud.

I have not tried the utility yet because I'm waiting for a guaranteed restore point to be created. But, can the utility be pointed to a local drive to create an importable file that I can upload on the server?

What are my options if I can't connect to the destination server with the utility?

Thank,

Will

Hi Will. As you migrate to the cloud, ensure that you do not introduce latency between your database and application server as that will affect SBM performance. The Copy Database wizard is often used to migrate from one supported database to another (like between SQL Server and Oracle). It requires an active connection to both systems - it cannot copy to a file. If you not trying to change your database vendor, I recommend a more simple backup and restore approach that your DBAs can assist you with. These typically result in a transportable file. Regardless if you use the backup/restore or the Copy Database wizard, I recommend that any SBM services are stopped during the operation.

Hey Will, for the database side, I would just backup the existing database, move the backup the cloud environment, and restore it on the cloud server. That would be much faster and easier than trying to setup the Copy Database. (The Copy Database requires that one server have access to both databases. You can't get around that requirement.)
