Novell Client 2 SP3 for Windows: Registry Settings

The related Cool Tool is Group Policy Administrative Template for Novell Client 2 SP3 for Windows.

As mentioned in TID 7011843, this article documents many of the settable parameters which control the behavior of the Novell Client 2 SP3 for Windows, which is supported on Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows 8, and Windows Server 2012. It is organized under the following sections, corresponding to the tabs on the Novell Client Configuration page, along with a number of settings for which no user interface currently exists.

Each setting is presented in the following format:

Setting Name: Typically, the name as presented in the Novell Client Properties pages.
Registry Key: The location in the registry where this setting is stored.
Value Name: The exact name as entered in the registry.
Value Data Type: The data type for this setting (REG_DWORD, REG_SZ, etc.)
Valid Data Range: The range of values allowable for this setting
Setting Default: The default value used by the Novell Client when newly installed.
Default Data: The data stored in the registry when the Novell Client is newly installed.
Help/Comment: Help text available in the Novell Client Property pages, and additional information which may be helpful in understanding the purpose and operation of the setting.

Note: The tab numbers included in the listed "Registry Key" may vary. For example, the registry key for the eDirectory tab is described below as [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Novell\Login\Profiles\System\Default\Tab1], but may be Tab2 or Tab3, Tab4, or Tab5 instead.

Help/Comment: Unlike the Novell Client for Windows XP/2003, this value is None (value not present in registry by default) in the registry. By default, the username field in the Default System Profile is not editable. This is a design-level behavior that differs between the Novell Client for Windows XP/2003 and the Novell Client for Windows 7.

On the Novell Client for Windows 7, the eDirectory username /inside/ the profile is implicitly the same as the user for whom the profile has been created and/or is about to be created. The "Username:" field in the "Credentials" tab of the Windows 7 client is grayed out because it will by definition follow/match/mirror the username that is entered into the Novell Client for Windows 7 credential provider.

Allowing the eDirectory username inside the profile to differ from the eDirectory username entered into the credential model would break the overall intended and expected behavior. The username entered into the credential provider is what selects which profile might be used. (i.e. First check for a user-level profile for the user entered, else fall back to a system profile.) The profile selected then provides everything besides the username itself.

Help/Comment: Enables or disables the Windows 'Do not check for user ownership of Roaming Profile Folders' policy. By default, Windows attempts to enhance profile security by checking the permissions on a remote roaming profile directory. But the check is performed in a Windows-specific manner, and this fails when the roaming profile path is to a Novell or other non-Windows-compatible resource. Setting this parameter to 'On' allows roaming profile paths to Novell and other non-Windows servers by disabling this Windows-specific security check. Help/Comment: Pre-Client for Open Enterprise Server 2 SP4 (IR4): Specifies the path and filename for a bitmap that will be used on the Novell Login dialog in place of the default Novell Client bitmap. Custom bitmap sizes can be used, but will affect the overall size of the Novell Login dialog.With regard to the size of the bitmap that should be used, Novell Client creates the bitmap of the correct dimensions at runtime. It uses a pre-determined height for the image, but the width depends upon the size of the horizontal space available.To create a bitmap of the right size for a particular machine, make a screen shot of the login dialog and observe the dimensions for the dialog displaying Novell Client's own bitmap. (e.g. Cut and paste just the Novell banner out of that image, and see how big just that portion is.)

Because the dimensions may vary depending on the machine, e.g. some have 96 dpi, some have 144 dpi, etc.; the Novell Client creates its own bitmap at runtime to be the correct size.

Such that if making or using the NCP connection to the first address in the list works, we will have chosen the best address according to the current costing information.

(Note any NSNS resolve or eDirectory resolve could potentially return multiple addresses. NSNS is sending us the address results from all the name resolution methods, and even within a single resolution method, multiple addresses can be returned from either DNS or SLP. In DNS this would happen when multiple addresses for the same name have been defined in DNS. For SLP it just depends on what you're resolving. If resolving a single server name in SLP then the multiple addresses represent all the address types and interfaces the server is bound to. If resolving an eDirectory partition boundary or eDirectory tree name in SLP, you can get dozens or hundreds of matching entries for all the various eDirectory replica servers that exist in the tree.)

IP Costing uses a TCP SYN connection establishment to measure whether the server is actually listening on the NCP port (typically, but not always, TCP port 524) as well as the time it took for the server to respond to establishing the TCP connection. This TCP connection attempt "is for costing purposes only" and will not cause an actual NCP-level connection to be established. We just establish the TCP-level connection and then tear it down, both to measure the operation time and to prove the NCP server is actually available at this address.

what you should see from a LAN trace perspective is that whenever an SLP query returns two or more TCP address attribute values, or whenever a DNS resolve returns more than one address, or whenever an eDirectory resolve returns more than one referral, the FIRST TIME we encounter those addresses you will see a bunch of TCP SYN connection attempts go out to those addresses, which are then just immediately torn down. Those costing results are then cached, so you shouldn't see the same activity occur again for the exact same addresses, until the cached results expire. During future resolution attempts, only addresses which aren't already in cache will have new costing TCP connections created.

Whichever address was recorded as having the fastest overall TCP SYN round trip time should be selected as our first NCP connection to attempt using or establishing in response to the resolve. (Best cost.) Any addresses for which the TCP SYN attempt timed out (NCP server not running or not responsive, even if the host itself is up) should be the last addresses we allow to be attempted. (Worst cost.)

These NCPs will be used instead of NCP 87,64 and NCP 87,65 when the Novell Client determines that the Novell file server supports the new APIs (i.e. when the server returns a value of "3" for the 64BitOffsetsSupportedFlag in NCP 23,17). Novell Client 2 SP4 will continue to work as usual with existing legacy servers.As a result of these improvements, if file reads and writes are for large amounts of data, up to 1MB TCP transfers will occur in response to a single NCP 87,72 or NCP 87,73 request. This results in a performance increase when large file copies / large file reads or writes are being performed, as compared to the previous 64KB limit.Beginning with Novell Client 2 SP4 for Windows (IR2), the Disable Large NCP Read Write policy is available to disable the use of these NCPs. This policy is intended for use ONLY if and when is is necessary to force the Novell Client to not use the NCP 87,72 and NCP 87,73 support in OES 11 SP2 May 2015 and OES 2015 and later. Beginning with Client for OES 2 SP4 (IR6), this new functionality is enabled by creating a DWORD value "LogRecordLockTimeout" under the [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Novell\Client\Parameters] key. If the registry value does not exist, or is set to 0x0, the new functionality does not occur.

If the "LogRecordLockTimeout" value is defined, it will be used as the NCP-level lock timeout value for all lock requests.

The expected behavior for OES NCP Server is to wait for "NCP-level timeout value * 54ms"; e.g. a "LogRecordLockTimeout" value of 0x5 would create an NCP Server-side wait of approximately 270ms.

Note there is no protection or upper limit imposed on this value, same as on Novell Client for Windows XP/2003. So it is possible to set a "LogRecordLockTimeout" value that would request a lock wait time that is longer than the 180-second NCP reply timeout. We recommend keeping this "LogRecordLockTimeout" timeout value under one second (to possibly five seconds at most), since the NCP connection will be held for the duration of the wait.

When logging in to both eDirectory and Windows through the credential provider of the Novell Client, the processing of login scripts stored in eDirectory now starts at the same time other login scripts are processed, such as the Windows user login script. This means that eDirectory login script execution will start (but not necessarily finish) before the user's Desktop is built.In addition, existing Windows policies such as Run logon scripts synchronously now apply to how the Novell logon script execution will be handled. This appears to be the default behavior in Windows Server with Terminal Services, but the policy may need to be explicitly set in other Windows configurations.If you require that logon script processing must finish before the user's desktop is built, you can enable this Windows policy in the Group Policy Editor (GPEDIT.MSC) under Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > System > Scripts > Run logon scripts synchronously. Note the same policy is also available as a User Configuration policy.

Possible values include:

0: The logon script and Windows Explorer can run simultaneously.
1: Windows Explorer does not start until the logon script has finished running.

This restriction can be used either on a user by user basis by adding it to HKEY_CURRENT_USER or on a computer wide basis by adding it to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
