Situation

SMG fronts GroupWise GWIA outbound, received gmail.com mail sent from GroupWise, says that the message is not encrypted, when there was a reference to verizon.net in the mime of the message.  The error in the gmail message was "<company name>.net did not encrypt this message".  However Gmail was just detecting the message was not encrypted.  This issue had nothing to do with the "company name".  The customer just happened to have the "<company name> as their ISP.
 

Cause

It was discovered in the SMG Admin UI, under Module Management, Interfaces, SMTP Interface Manager, expand server, "External Delivery" that the "Connection Security" was set to "None".  With this setting there
SMG will not attempt to switch to a TLS encrypted session, even if it is advertised by the destination server.

Resolution

In the SMG Admin UI, under Module Management, Interfaces, SMTP Interface Manager, expand server, "External Delivery" the "Connection Security"should be "Auto" to send to external smtp servers.  Then you need to click on the blue disk icon in the upper right to SAVE the change.
