After having quite some trouble with SLES some months ago migrating SMG from appliance to application was no option for me.
I am rethinking this now, because having a fullsize SLES under SMG might give the option to add fetchmail and - maybe - postfix on the same machine (which was a no-go with the appliance).
We again talked to our ISP lately and download e-mail from POP3 is the only variant they can offer (no SMTP for download), so we will stay this for some more future and need a connector like fetchmail. Upload via SMTPS is today done with postfix, which could be done by SMG itself in the future.
Both fetchmail and postfix run on a dedicated linux-machine, which would be then obsolete.
Could this be a working path?
