SMG 24.3 on a new sles15sp5 server

The new version/Build of SMG must be installed on a sles15sp5 server or opensuse 15 sp5/sp6, there is no more a appliance.

i had instal a new sles15sp5 with the documented applications, then do the changes for postgres database, install smg and then configure it.

After installation and by the command "zypper up" i see the following message:

Refreshing service 'Basesystem_Module_15_SP5_x86_64'.
Refreshing service 'Python_3_Module_15_SP5_x86_64'.

When you seperate SMG from the underlying OS, will there be a windows-server-version as with GroupWise?

I am NOT asking for a friend.

After investing some months with a really enthusiastic momentum in the beginning to move our GroupWise from Netware to Sles/Oes I finally ended up moving GroupWise to Windows-Server.

I am burnt with Sles and - looking at this thread  and my experiences with the paid support - have doubts, that OT will be able to provide us with a longterm stable and reliable solution. I want to focus on the application-level and do not want to fight with frictions between application and OS, where every patch is due to break a security relevant piece of my networking, forcing me to invest days on the console to bring the stuff up again.

    Sorry if I sound bitter.

    Regards

    Karl

Karl, sorry to hear that you were struggling with Linux.

No, I doubt that there will be a SMG Windows version. SMG is rpm-based and that is a Linux story. However SMG will run on OpenSuSE too.

Linux (and SuSE) is independent of OT. A lot of large software companies trust in Linux (i.e. SAP); even Microsoft is using Linux in the background. OT tries to support their own products - but sles is not OT.

Coming back to GroupWise. I think that Linux has a faster file system than Windows. And a fast file system is one of the key points for GroupWise.

Karl, netware is since long years eol and oes is a better os, we must go with the evolution!

if you want, i had a good and full documentation for install sles15sp5 and smg24.3 without any trouble.

And you book Diethmar to configure the best smg system!

i am a long administrator/integrator/multiplicator for novell/microfocus/OT software, and the best platform for Groupwise is OES, then sles and when you chief don't want other system as Microsoft take at least a windows server (we say in Germany "WinDoof"

The community is here to share our experience and it is better we help us to take a good decision and help by trouble, the ot-support must be better and become more experience

Just to confrim Diethmar's answer here.  No there will not be a Windows version of SMG.

    but sles is not OT

... and that feels like the breaking-point for me, that is why I was glad to get the SMG-thing ready configured to be thrown on my ESXi-enviroment, no grieve, no pain.

FYI - I was told yesterday that the end of committed suport date for SMG 23.x has been changed from Dec 31, 2024 to July 31, 2025.  I don't know when that change will actually be updated on the lifecycle page.
