AFAIR Groupwise checks user's password by doing LDAP bind and when password expires eDirectory just replies back with error.
Unfortunately I don't know if there is a quick and out of the box solution for password expiration handling, but with most of the customers we do set up SSPR.
This gives us possibility to handle complete password lifecycle, from setting initial password, changing passwords, forgotten password functionality and also password expiration notifications: www.netiq.com/.../t45sapdfh5rd.html

Yeah. That was what I have done in the past, but then I used an open-source app for this. For our small shop is it av overkill though so I might resort to a weekly report from DS and alert my coworkers over morning coffee :)
I did a quick test and with the following settings Im able to change the password when i login at the GW client when it expires so this should cover the part that no need to have a warning upfront for the user right?
eDir
GW LDAP server
Then starting the GW client
We wrote and used a script based on this thread to email users directly before their password expired (handy for web access only users).
