14.2 GMS still uses Hostname for autodiscover

Hi,

unfortunately gms still uses the hostname for autodiscover. this is a hassle since nearly all gms machines reside on a local domain or public subdomain and email addresse reside on the domain. since autodiscover only works with ssl enabled you want to stick to a none used public subdomain such as intra.example.com so you don't have to transfer certificates to the client devices.

in order to have autodiscover working your gms hostname has to be a public one such as gms.example.com so that autodiscover will do the configuration job.

with that said i'm only able to access gms admin console via ip or public domain name when port 8120 is open on the firewall. ip will allways get a certificate warning and opening the port 8120 might not be best practice.

if anybody has setup multiple hostnames (public and local) for gms and still got autodiscover working, please let me know.

thx

So you stated on your post that GMS is hostname and requires external hostname for autodiscover to work ? Do you mean I will not be able to configure autodiscover if servers are inside the dmz on local domain with local domain and host names ?

not sure how much experience you have with auto discover but I am struggling setting up multiple GMS and trying to redirect any user that tries to connect to one server to the other. Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

the gms hostname has to be the same as the server address you want to deploy with autodiscover. this is usually a public subdomain and not a local domain.

i tried to add a local name including local domain to the hostfile. no issues so far. i can now access the mgmt console via local dns with no portforwarding setup in the firewall. it would be great if novell adds a config for internal and external url in the mgmt console.

according your second question. why would you redirect to specific server. actually you have a gms cluster for load balancing. i dont know if this even possible. for autodiscover you have to setup multiple srv records as described in the gms doc. i think you are looking for a roundrobin solution which send querrys from one domain to multiple gms servers. but this something you have to check with your domain hoster.

hope i could point you in a new direction.
