Knowledge Document: ControlPoint Services fail with "Unable to connect to remote server" error

Environment

ControlPoint 5.x

Situation

Sometimes in certain scenarios eg. unexpected shut down, upgrade, .etc ; ControlPoint and IDOL Services may fail to start, when looking at Health Check, this error can be seen:

"Unable to connect to remote server"

Resolution

First, go to: Program Files\Micro Focus\ControlPoint\LicenseServer

Open license.log, if this error is seen:

"Your License has expired"

Then go to: https://sld.microfocus.com/mysoftware/download/downloadCenter

And request a new Licensekey.dat file

Performing a License Reset should resolve the error in both normal case and License Expired case:

Note: the process should be done outside working hours and each step should be taken very carefully

Back up > Remove licensekey.dat file from LicenseServer folder:

Program Files\Micro Focus\ControlPoint\LicenseServer

Stop order for services (regardless of architecture/number of machines):
========================================

Stop any connectors first:

ControlPoint FileSystem Connector
ControlPoint FileSystem Connector Framework

etc

Then stop in this order (order important):

ControlPoint Metastore
ControlPoint Distributed Connector
ControlPoint IDOL
ControlPoint OGS
ControlPoint DataAnalysis Store
ControlPoint Content
ControlPoint LicenseServer

Then stop (order not important):

ControlPoint Controller
ControlPoint Controller Agent
ControlPoint SQL Agent
ControlPoint Engine
ControlPoint Licenser Service
ControlPoint Redirector

Check no processes listed in task manager are still lingering such as :

dah
view

If so kill them.

Copy licensekey.dat (use the new licensekey.dat if it's License Expired) back to Program Files\ Micro Focus \ControlPoint\LicenseServer

Restart license server service.
Checked it started ok by inspecting its license.log

Then try starting each content engine one by one
If none start due to license not being acquired clean these files to allow license to be requested
e.g.
delete license folder
delete uid folder
delete *.lck

Then restart each content engine.
Checked they started ok by inspecting license.log
