DP 23.3 VMware GRE Granular recovery woes

Hi. We've recently upgraded to DP 23.3. We're running a Linux Cell using Redhat 7.9 along with some physical Linux mount proxy servers. We're backing up some VM's using VMware integration and when trying to use the 'Granular Recovery' plugin in the VC web interface we recieve the following error. This is after we have selected the backup and are trying to expand the drive (scsi0:0 for example). We are trying to browse the backup of a Linux server via a Linux mount proxy.

ERROR: vmwaregre-agent was unable to load mount component.

Check that you installed all required packages and that your config matches all prerequistites.

We have the following components installed on the mount proxy:

Disk Agent

General media agent

Virtual environment integration

Automatic Disaster recovery

VMware Granular Recovery Extension Agent

Any help around what may be causing this error would be much appreciated as we haven't had much success with GRE in the past and haven't seen this message before.

I see a new model for GRE is available since 23.4 - is this likely to be a more robust method for restoring files from within VMware integrated backups?

Thanks!

The components mentioned are the ones documented here:

    Please double check.

And yes, the new GRE implementation as of 23.4 is a completely different implementation without a web plugin and much more straight-forward. More info can be found here:

    Thanks Koen.

We have this week upgraded to 23.4 specifically to test the new GRE. Can I confirm that the only prerequisites 'new GRE' are those found on the following page. It seems the only real requirements are libguestfs-tools/libguestfs-devel for Linux? - it's not quite clear whether the old mount proxy prerequisites are required.

Also we are seeing an issue with the new GRE. We have two Cells (RHEL 7.9) - primary replicates to the secondary. Each Cell has it's own Windows and Linux mount proxies. We haven't yet 'new GRE' using the Linux mount proxies as we're yet to get hold of the libguestfs packages. Testing 'new GRE' with the Windows mount proxies (Win 2019), the primary one works just fine but when trying to restore using the secondary Cell/mount proxy, the recovery sessions just sit in the 'In Progress' state. They've been like that since yesterday and don't look like they are going to timeout or error. In the logs accessible from the Restore home page in the DP GUI I can see messages relating to mounting the disks but they don't appear on the system and the sessions stay 'in progress'. We can't find any processes relating to the sessions and we have rebooted both the Cell and the mount proxy but we can't get rid of the in progress sessions . We've tried unmounting the disks - again no errors but the sessions don't go.

Do you know if there is any way to tidy up these sessions, and what is the likely cause of this?

    Thanks.

Yes, as far as I'm aware, the prerequisites are documented on that new page in the manuals and nothing else is required.

regarding your issue, I'm not sure why it is not mounting/unmounting. I wrote this article some weeks ago:

Support Tip: VEPA GRE request (web GUI method) staying "In Progress"

But apparently you tried this already and it didn't work? Did you try to refresh?

Also note you could vote on my Idea Exchange request to enhance this:

Feel free to let us know about the current status if this was not resolved yet.
