Appliance Security Updates

by in Portfolio

Don't forget to keep your Appliance updated!

Check out this video on how to do it.

Or keep reading to understand how to update an Appliance:

What is an Appliance and how do we update and patch the operating system and products that reside on them?

Appliances have been a staple in software products for quite a few years now. They are built on a common appliance framework that can be used for multiple products.

Appliances are used for many of the OpenText products:

The Appliance Linux OS is streamlined to a particular product where rpms and security patches are standardized and protection to the device is maximized. Having the same standard build allows for easier updates without adding nonessential programs for options. The appliance also allows for scripting to preconfigure the device for the product needs like firewall settings, protocol activations, and certificates. Along with the Common Appliance Framework comes the Appliance administration console which is a graphical user interface to control both the appliance operating system components and the product configuration installed on the appliance.

These Appliance operating systems need patches as well as the products that reside on them. To do so, the appliance is registered to its unique channel which has both the latest OS patches, product updates, and in some cases minor upgrades. The console will alert you to any new updates that are available to the appliance.

The streamlined appliance server is dedicated to a particular product for efficiency and security.  Registering the Appliance to the Update Channel will provide the latest security updates.  These updates keep the linux server secure from vulnerabilities and update product hotfixes through this channel.

You don't need to wonder which channel to pick because the product appliance knows which OS and product is installed to register to. All you have to do is register it by selecting the registration key from SLD and go to the Appliance Administration console (9443), selecting the Online Update tile.

In the menu select Register.

Once you enter your email and registration key the appliance will regularly check for updates to the OS and product in that channel. It will signify a new update with a red exclamation point displayed on the Online Update tile.

The registered appliance Online Update Channel will display any cumulative security patches for the operating system and any product updates or hotfixes for the product.
