Using different Client and FileServer versions

Hi

We are currently having a lot of clients in several UNIX legacy servers (Solaris 8, HPUX 11.11, RHEL 5) that are client to a fileserver server (RHEL 5.11 version VM 8.4)

We are thinking on upgrading the FileServer Linux to RHEL 7 but we won't be able to upgrade the client servers to higher versions of their current OS

Is this feasible? Could we install VM 8.4 fileserver in RHEL 7? If that is not possible, could we mantain legacy clients in VM 8.4 although we upgrade Fileserver to latest 8.6?

    Hello Pedro,

    It is feasible to have older VM clients connect to a newer VM File Server. I recommend you install the current PVCS VM 8.6.2 release on RHEL 7 and point your clients to it. Some potentially useful KB docs:

    In case your RHEL 5.11 machine also runs the license server, move this over as well by installing SLM 2.3.0 there and pointing your clients to it. The newer SLM server can work with all your exists clients. Another potentially useful KB doc:

    S142168 - Required Operating System packages to run SLM 2.2.0 or SLM 2.3.0 on Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL)

    For both you could avoid the "point your clients to it" step by renaming the old RHEL 5.1 machine and creating a DNS alias (CNAME) that points to the new machine.
