Upgrading PVCS VM and migrating from Solaris to Oracle Enterprise Linux

We are migrating from Solaris 11 to Oracle Enterprise Linux. We're currently running a pretty ancient version (5.3) and would certainly like to migrate to a more current version of PVCS VM.  We have concerns that only 2 Linux distributions are listed as supported (Red Hat and SUSE). But I'd like to think that MicroFocus simply doesn't go to the trouble of certifying on the myriad of distros that are available.

I'm also a little concerned that our target OS is indicated to run a '64-bit only kernel' (UEKR5). Some have implied that this means that 32-bit applications won't run in this env. But my understanding is that they can if the right libraries are present. IAC, is the current version of PVCS VM for Linux a 64-bit app or a 32-bit app?

Thanks for any insights you can provide.

    Hello Mark,

As Oracle Linux is effectively a clone of Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) you can reasonably expect it to work. We do not test on Oracle Linux, but some of our customers are using it and I have not heard of any issues with current PVCS VM releases.

As of VM 8.6.0.0, PVCS Version Manager is a 64-bit application. However, there are a few 32-bit binaries that continue to exist, so you need to install some 32-bit support libraries for your operating system to run those. For RHEL, all of the required RPMs are documented in the following KB doc:

S142025 - Required Operating System packages to run VM 8.6.x on Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) and SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES)

I've not heard of a 64-bit kernel prohibiting the use of 32-bit applications, so this is not something I would expect to be a problem. If you find otherwise, please provide some details on your experience. Thanks in advance.

    With kind regards,

    - Richard.

    Thanks Richard,

I _think_ we've since determined that the target Oracle Linux environment will run both 64- and 32-bit apps. (But I believe the Mac's latest OS (Catalina 10.15.3) is an example of an OS running 64-bit apps only).

I wasn't able to view the S142025 - Required Operating System packages to run VM 8.6.x on Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) and SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES)  link, due to access restrictions.

    Thanks,

    Mark

    You're welcome, Mark.

Yeah, Apple unnecessarily yanked 32-bit app support out of MacOS, which is creating its own set of issues (some of which I'm dealing with in my household).

I don't see Red Hat dropping support for 32-bit apps any time soon, though, which they are confirming here.
