Can an aviation practice enhance a major event security? Find out at ISC West

by   in Data Analytics

In commercial aviation, where safety and security is paramount, CRM (Crew Resource Management) is defined as the effective use of all available resources for flight crew personnel to assure a safe and efficient operation, reducing error, avoiding stress and increasing efficiency1.  With hundreds of lives literally in the air, there is no room for mistakes. Similarly, in a major event with a massive audience, the complexity of event security requires effective use of all available sources for security personnel to achieve pretty much the same objectives as the ones stated above for a commercial flight.

GSOC.pngIn the case of managing event security, typical resources are people and equipment. However, one of the most under-used resources is data. With the right use of data, people and equipment can work together more efficiently and effectively. CCTVs are standard in security infrastructure. They generate huge amount of video data, which often outstrips human operators’ capacity to monitor, and ends up being used for investigation after an incident has already taken place. With automated video analytics that continuously processes and analyzes images of face, vehicle and physical space, there is valuable real-time intelligence for accelerated threat detection so operators can potentially neutralize a threat before it turns into an incident.

For example, would it be valuable to automatically register an unknown individual with associated data (face, race, gender, age range, clothing colors), who has just entered the event venue with a known individual on a watch list? With face analytics, once a known individual on a watch list is recognized, his/her unknown companion can be added to the system by analyzing the companion’s facial image and extracting demographic data. Also, would it be valuable to automatically detect mismatched license plates (e.g. a plate registered to a white Honda is on a red Toyota) on vehicles entering event parking? Vehicle analytics can do just that. How about detecting a suspicious package left near an area with high pedestrian traffic? Scene analytics can distinguish and recognize different types of object (e.g. a glass bottle vs a backpack) in a designated area of concern. What if all these alerts- high risk person detection, mismatch plate recognition, and suspicious package identification – happen within 10 min? A dynamic workflow that adapts to real-time situation (e.g. elevated threat level) can provide the appropriate instructions for operators to address such as threat.
